How Much Protein Do You Need?

Protein is an important part of the bodies recovery process. Protein is made up of amino acids, which are the building blocks of restoring new tissues in the body. The amount of protein that your body needs is dependent on how much you break down the tissues in your body, particularly muscle tissue. Below we’ve listed the recommended protein intake for three different lifestyles.

National Average (Average Lifestyle)

According to the “experts” an average person should get about 50-60 grams of protein per day.  It’s not hard to get this amount just by getting the foods you eat on a regular basis.  A typical 8 ounces of meat could be packed with over 50 grams of protein itself!

Runner,Swimmer (Very Active Lifestyle)

If you’re living more of an active lifestyle than the average person then you should be including some additional protein into your diet. How much protein you ask? This really all depends, but on average you should try to be getting over 100 grams per day so that your body has the protein that it needs to recover.

Bodybuilder, Weight Lifter

If you fall into this category then protein should be a primary concern in your diet. It’s not uncommon for bodybuilders to take over 400 grams of protein in a single day! This is not necessary though and is reserved for the bulky professional bodybuilders. A typical amateur bodybuilder or weight lifter should strive to get about 200 grams of protein into their body each day, or about 1.0-1.6 grams of protein per pound of body weight.
